Eleri is a second alto and also Viva Treasurer.
"I joined Viva la Musica in March 2016 as a member of the alto section. I came to join as someone I knew in the choir invited me to audition.
What I most enjoy about Viva is being pushed to tackle more challenging music than I would otherwise have had the opportunity to sing. My background in singing started when I was very young. I remember at the age of 7 having to sing a solo as Mary in the Nativity play both at school and church. Other childhood musical interests included playing the recorder and piano. I loved listening to my father's vinyl LP of Holst's The Planets and being allowed to stay up late to watch Oscar Peterson playing jazz on the TV.
I have sung with other choirs including various Methodist Church choirs, Bedford Choral Society, Leicester Bach Choir and Loughborough Singers. Singing with Viva la Musica is particularly exciting as it is so special to make music with such a talented bunch of singers. Highlights of singing with Viva have been (is it possible to pick a highlight?) I just love making wonderful music that stretches me. It would be difficult to say what my favourite repertoire is - but I'm not keen on plainchant! There are lots of gorgeous pieces that we sing, and our programmes are always very approachable.
Singing with a choir like Viva seems to show me that no matter how difficult/impossible things seem at the start, with patience and perseverance it all comes together. Also, there are other things that come as a perhaps unexpected benefit, such as teamwork, breath control, and gaining knowledge of other languages.
Outside of Viva la Musica, my other musical pursuits and interests include playing the piano, clarinet and alto saxophone, especially in our family ensemble (two clarinets, two cellos and a double bass!)
Outside of my musical life, I studied Civil Engineering at University and spent a few years working as a Land Surveyor. I now juggle two part-time roles as an Administrator at Loughborough University and a Local Lay Pastor for the Methodist Church. When not singing or at work, I still find time to enjoy walks in the countryside and crafts such as embroidery and crochet."
