"Singing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father played the organ and he was my first music teacher and inspiration and his mother, my grandmother, sang in a performance of Messiah with Peter Pears as a soloist. I have an autographed programme to prove it!
I recall primary school radio singing sessions which I believe were called Time and Tune, then Rhythm and Melody and finally Singing Together in Year 6! I was lucky to attend a secondary school in which music was very important and that cemented my love of all kinds of music, including singing. My first ‘grown up’ choir was in my home city of Bristol and one of the more worrying aspects of moving to Leicestershire as an adult was whether I would ever feel the same about any choir, but I needn’t have worried. Viva la Musica and my membership of Leicestershire Chorale complement each other perfectly and give me so much joy.
I particularly enjoy 20th century music, especially English music, which often features in our Viva repertoire. The other thing I have really valued is the friendships which I’ve been able to forge and I feel that my life is truly enriched through aspiring to reach the highest standards of music-making with like-minded people. Long may it continue!"
