Rachel is a tenor
I joined the tenor section of Viva La Musica in summer 2026. I was particularly attracted to sing the American programme of that first concert, including favourites Whitacre, Lauriden and Bernstein. But I was soon drawn in by the choir’s impressive high standards, deep commitment to musical excellence and friendly atmosphere, and I look forward to future concerts.
My background in the arts is a busy childhood of dancing, music and theatre, including learning the piano, recorder, cello and singing, and then going on to a 30-year career in arts management. I never really thought my singing was any good, until in my late 20s, another female tenor persuaded me to join her in a choir. And since then I have definitely found the strengths of my voice – rather lower than I thought!
I have been a long-time member of Nottingham Chamber Singers, the auditioned choir of Nottingham’s Music For Everyone, for whom I also served as a Trustee for 9 years. I also love to do extra workshops, come-and-sing or ad hoc events where I can try out new singing styles and experiences – a highlight was joining Nottingham Cathedral Choir to sing Tallis’ Spem In Alium encircling a spellbound audience.
I now work as an administrator at Nottingham University Hospitals, and singing is a perfect antidote to the stresses of the day - where I can always enjoy exercising my brain, my body and my emotions all at once.
